CARBONDALE, Ill. (NewsFirst) — The Carbondale Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect who allegedly displayed a weapon and fled from officers in a white sedan last week.
The suspect has been identified as Nekuma L. Johnson, 30, of Cairo. He is wanted on charges of aggravated unlawful use of weapons, aggravated fleeing to elude and reckless driving, according to a press release from the department.
According to a press release by the Carbondale Police Department, the incident occurred on October 21, around 5:21 p.m., when officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm in the 700 block of North Giant City Road. A witness told the police that the suspect was a black male who was leaving in a white Chevrolet sedan.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped away south on North Giant City Road. Officers did not pursue the vehicle when the driver began to drive recklessly. The vehicle later turned east onto East Walnut Street and crashed near the intersection of Webb Road.
The suspect then ran away from the vehicle on foot. He was last seen running north in the woods between County Line and Spillway Road. Officers recovered a firearm from the crashed vehicle.
Johnson is described as a black male, about 6 feet tall, wearing black clothing. He is considered armed and dangerous.
