In an eco-friendly initiative, our Christmas Tree Recycling Program utilizes donated evergreen trees to construct fish habitat structures in public lakes throughout Kentucky, enhancing fish habitats and public fishing opportunities. Join us in this effort by simply removing all decorations, loading up your tree, and dropping it off at a designated site near you.
Drop-off Information:
- Dates: December 26 – January 15
- Locations: Listed and shown on the interactive map link below
- Note: Drop-off sites may not have staff present during your visit, so be prepared to unload your tree independently.
Guidelines:
- Please remove all artificial decorations, lights, tinsel, ornaments, etc., from your tree.
- Drop-off sites will be open during daylight hours only (between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm).
By participating in this program, you contribute to improving fish habitat across the Commonwealth. Your donated trees will be repurposed to create fish attractors for lakes statewide, replenishing existing fish habitat sites and establishing new ones. These brush reefs serve as vital nesting and rearing areas for gamefish, while also providing homes for invertebrates and smaller fishes, forming the foundation of the food chain for larger fish.
As the winter holidays approach, consider giving your natural tree a second life after the festivities. Help us make a positive impact on fish populations across the state while enjoying the opportunity to explore local parks. For insights into where your donated tree might end up or to suggest new habitat sites, contact your local fisheries biologist. Find contact information for your area on our Fisheries Staff page.
Thank you for your support in creating a sustainable and thriving aquatic environment. Remember us as you embark on your post-holiday cleanup, and let’s make a lasting impact together!
