PADUCAH, KY (August 30, 2024) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates ongoing work zone construction and long-term maintenance activities at the following locations will impact traffic in District 1 counties the week of Sept. 1-7.

More detailed information on these work zones (including maps) can be found on our Facebook page listed below.

I-24 Tennessee River Bridge Rehab and Painting at 29mm
Equipment and rigging was removed from the westbound bridge on Thursday and Friday. All four lanes of the interstate will be open through Labor Day. Crews will begin installing barriers and rigging on the eastbound bridge on Tuesday. That process will take up to four days to complete, during which time some nighttime lane restrictions or closures may be necessary. We continue to ask local commuters to take an alternate route via U.S. 62 between Exit 27 and Exit 40.  Message boards will be in place to notify motorists of changes as they occur. Target for project completion is Dec 1, 2024.

Purchase Parkway Extended Work Zone 0 to 21mm
This work zone runs from the Kentucky-Tennessee State Line at Fulton and the U.S. 45/KY 80-Bypass Mayfield Exit 21 interchange in Mayfield.  It includes a 13 ft. maximum load width restriction at mile point 1.3 near Fulton.  On completion late this year, Interstate 69 will be extended along the final 21 miles of the existing parkway. The target completion date for all of the upgrades is Nov 2, 2024.

U.S. 45-Business (KY Ave) Downtown Paducah Signal Change
Traffic signals along U.S. 45-Business (Kentucky Avenue) at 5th Street and at 6th Street will be in flash mode for 90 days to allow a traffic flow study to determine how the intersections will function without a signal. The signals will flash yellow for caution along U.S. 45-Business and flash red to require stops for traffic on 5th Street and 6th Street. East-west traffic on U.S. 45-Business (Kentucky Avenue) will flow freely, while north-south traffic on the side streets will have to stop at the intersection.  Motorists should be alert for changes in traffic flow the signal alterations will bring to these intersections.

Project to update exit ramps gets under way
On Sunday, August 25, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet began the final phase of a project that seeks to improve safety on area roadways by preventing motorists from turning the wrong way on interstate and parkway ramps. Beginning Sunday, August 25, crews will be working nightly from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. restriping stop bars at these same locations. Stop bars are the thick white line painted on the roadway to tell motorists the proper stopping point. It is expected that each ramp will be closed for approximately 30 minutes while this work is being completed. Work is scheduled to take place between August 25 and September 5. There will be no work completed during the Labor Day Weekend (August 30 – September 2) or on Wednesday, September 4.
