A 40-year-old woman drowned in Big River near St. Francois State Park over the weekend. The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirms Melissa Hill of Valley Park entered the water to assist someone else in the water when she became unconscious and was seen floating face down. Her body was recovered by bystanders who began life-saving efforts, but Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. The Missouri State Park Rangers, St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, St. Francois County Ambulance District, and the Desoto Rural Fire Protection District all assisted at the scene.
