CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo (News First) – A 72-year-old Springfield man is behind bars after admitting to Cape Girardeau police officers that he robbed a bank. Richard Bann was sitting on a walker by the front door of Southern Bank on North Kingshighway on Tuesday, August 6th holding an envelope when officers arrived.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department says that Bann told the responding officer that he was expecting him and he had just robbed the bank. Bann provided the officer with an envelope containing a $20 bill and said he wanted to be imprisoned so he’d get medical attention.
The officer spoke with witnesses on the scene who advised that Bann entered and announced he was going to rob the bank. Bann told the witness to place money into an envelope but did not specify how much. The witness placed a $20 bill in an envelope and handed it to Bann who then exited the business and waited by the front door for police to arrive. No weapons were found.
Bann was formally charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecutors Office with a class B felony of stealing and is currently being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
