Testimony begins in a hearing with life-or-death implications for Missouri inmate Marcellus Williams. The hearing on Wednesday addresses whether to vacate Williams’ 1998 murder conviction. Time is of the essence: Williams is scheduled to be executed at the Bonne Terre prison on September 24th and neither Missouri’s governor nor the attorney general has shown any inclination to delay the process. Williams was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1998 stabbing death of Lisha Gayle. He was hours away from execution in 2017 when then-Governor Eric Greitens halted the process and appointed a panel to consider new DNA evidence. The panel never issued a report.
