It took 12 innings but the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Milwaukee Brewers 7 to 4 Tuesday night to even up their 3-game series. The game was tied at 3 after 9 innings. Both teams scored a run apiece in the 11th and the Cards 3-spot in the 12th was the decider. Michael Siani singled in the go-ahead run in the 12th but the biggest bat of the night for the Cardinals belonged to Paul Goldschmidt who went 3 for 5, he hit his 21st home run of the season and drove in 3 runs in the game.

Steven Matz got the start, just after he returned from the disabled list. He pitched 4 and 2-thirds of an inning and gave up 3 runs on 3 hits, had 7 strikeouts and he walked one batter. Ryan Helsey, who has a Major League-leading 42 saves, gave up the tying run in the 11th but he pitched a perfect 12th inning to pick up the win, improving his record to 7-4. The rubber game of the series will be played Wednesday night in Milwaukee. Sonny Grey, with a 12-9 record, will get the start on the mound for St. Louis.
