JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (News First) – An 18-year-old was killed and two others injured in a horse-drawn buggy crash in Jefferson County, Illinois on Monday (Sept 9th). A statement released by the sheriff’s office on Facebook states the accident happened before 5 pm on Log Cabin Lane and Goshen Road when a Dodge van, driven by 32-year-old Katlyn M. Catron of Ina, Illinois, hit the buggy driven by 20-year-old Dena M. Mast of Belle Rive, from behind.
Mast and her two passengers, 18-year-old Elma Mast and 21-year-old Mary M. Mast also of of Bell Rive, received serious injuries. Elma was rushed to SSM Good Samaritan Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Mary and Dena were flown to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment.
Catron and her juvenile passenger were not seriously injured in the crash.
The family of the Masts arrived on the scene to assist with the recovery and treatment of the horse, which was also injured during the crash.
Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to assist with the crash investigation. The circumstances are still being investigated.
