FARMINGTON, Mo. (News First) – Week 3 of the high school football season will see several exciting matchups.
One game from Thursday night and it was a doozy. The Fredericktown Blackcats gave it their all and nearly pulled the upset over last year’s Class 3 state champions, the Central Rebels. The Rebels did escape though with the victory, 42-34 in double overtime over Fredericktown.
News First will be tracking 26 football games on Friday night and four of those games will be the battle of the unconquered teams.. Probably the game generating the most excitement this week is a crosstown rival showdown as the St. Vincent Indians go to Perryville High School to take on the Pirates. Last week, the Indians throttled the always-impressive Valle Catholic football team by 17 points. It was the first time St. Vincent beat Valle in 17 years. The Indians began their season with a big shutout win over the other Ste. Gen team, the Dragons. Perryville has been just as impressive with a big 3-point win on the road last week against Desoto and began the season with a comfortable win over Fredericktown. The other three 2 and 0 versus 2-0 matchups have Festus against Windsor, Seckman will battle Northwest and St. James welcomes Hermann to the Tigers’ field.
Six games might be just a step below the undefeated games and that’s 1-1 Valle Catholic at 2-0 Potosi, 1-1 Sikeston will be playing at 2-0 Cape Central, the upstart 2-0 Eagles of Grandview will play in Cuba against the 1-1 Wildcats and there’s a couple battle of the 1-1 teams, where Desoto is at North County and Farmington at Poplar Bluff.
The rest of this weekend’s football matchups will have Jefferson at Herculaneum, Kennett at Ste. Genevieve, Washington at Hillsboro, Bayless at Crystal City, Fox at Ritenour and Houston at Salem.
There’s also Knob Knoster at St. Pius, Carlyle, Illinois at Caruthersville, Malden at Charleston, New Madrid County Central at Dexter, Chaffee at East Prairie, Edwardsville, Illinois will be in Jackson to face the Indians, Confluence Prep is at Portageville, Kelly at Rolla, Hayti will be at Scott City and Sullivan and Union will do battle to see who can get that first win of the season.
