FARMINGTON, Mo. (News First) – If there is no cloud cover Tuesday night, you will be able to see the supermoon and a partial lunar eclipse. According to timeanddate.com, the eclipse start time for those in southeast Missouri is 7:41 Tuesday night and it will end at 11:47 p.m. About 9:44 is when you can get your best look. Don’t expect to see what you saw during the total solar eclipses. Tuesday night, you will see a dark sliver of a shadow on the moon but the highlight will be a larger and brighter than normal full moon.
This is happening because the moon is hitting its perigee or the point when the moon is closest to the earth during an elliptical orbit. The moon’s perigee is not a precise thing though. In fact, through the course of orbit, the moon may hit its perigee, or close to it, 3 or 4 times a year. That’s why some supermoons are more spectacular than others. Clear skies are in the forecast on Tuesday night for the News 1st coverage area.
