SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Sept. 29, 2024) — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), in partnership with Southern Illinois University, is reintroducing its Cycle Rider Safety Training Program to Illinois residents 16 and older with a valid driver’s license. The program, which had experienced a temporary halt statewide due to a change in course vendors, is now resuming in full.
“We are excited to bring this valuable program back to communities across the state,” said an IDOT spokesperson. “Partnering with SIU allows us to expand access and help ensure that Illinois riders stay safe on the road.”
The program offers hands-on instruction for motorcycle riders of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders, focusing on safety and accident prevention. The courses are free for Illinois residents and have a proven track record of reducing motorcycle crashes and fatalities.
Classes are being rolled out gradually, with IDOT aiming to restore full availability in all parts of the state over the coming months.
For more information on course schedules and locations, residents can visit the Cycle Rider Safety Training Program website.
