How might La Nina development influence the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s weather forecast for this coming winter?
La Nina development over the winter months remains highly probable. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippe says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter climatic outlook for 2024 25 indicates we are still expecting about a three-quarters chance of La Nina development within the next month or two. The influence on winter weather patterns possibly includes primary wet conditions in the nation’s northern tier and drier the normal conditions across the southern stretch of the country. In terms of temperature patterns during this expected La Nina winter, generally warm conditions will accompany those drier than normal weather conditions across the southern United States. Some of that warmth should extend into the eastern U. S. As well. And then with occasional incursions of cold air that could drive winter temperatures to below normal values across parts of the north, especially from the pacific northwest into the northern plains and far upper Midwest,” shares Rod Bain and U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey.
