AVA, Mo. (News First) – Mark Twain National Forest firefighters continue to actively fight the Sugar Fire in the Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs Ranger District. The fire is burning in the glades, about 12 miles south/southwest of Ava. The firefighters worked overnight to hold the fire. The forest fire is estimated to be around 1500 acres in size. A news release from the forest service says good progress was made overnight and Tuesday morning. The fire is currently 60% contained. The Douglas County sheriff has contacted homeowners on the north end of the fire and several evacuations have taken place. Local volunteer fire departments, including those from Goodhope and Squires, have set up structure protection around those homes near the fire but so far, no structures have been lost.
