WALTONVILLE, Ill. (News First) — A minor earthquake shook parts of southern Illinois on Sunday night, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 3.1 and occurred at 10:10 p.m. local time. The epicenter was about 3.6 miles west-northwest of Waltonville, in Jefferson County, and about 12.1 miles southwest of Mount Vernon.

The quake was felt by some residents in the area, who reported hearing a loud boom and feeling a brief jolt. Some also said they saw items on shelves or walls move slightly.

Illinois is not a stranger to earthquakes. The last notable quake in Illinois was a 5.2 magnitude temblor that struck near West Salem in 2008, causing minor damage and some power outages.
