JEFFERSON COUNTY, ILLINOIS (NewsFirst) — JCSO Deputies Involved in Shooting
At 11:14 p.m. on February 29, 2024, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were involved in shooting on northbound Kipling at its intersection with I-70. Prior to the shooting, another deputy had initiated a motorist assist for a vehicle that was disabled in the left lane of northbound Kipling St., just south of I-70. When the deputy realized the license plates on the vehicle had long since expired, he then initiated a traffic stop instead of a motorist assist and called for backup cover. Two deputies were in the second unit that arrived on scene. Upon their arrival, the male driver and a female passenger of the suspect vehicle had exited the vehicle and were walking around. They both ignored commands to get back into their vehicle.
The deputies attempted de-escalation, but the male suspect fired upon them. The deputies returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. Both our deputies and responding medical personnel provided first aid to the suspect before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No deputies or by-standers were injured during the shooting.
Upon further investigation, it was learned the suspect had been armed with two handguns that were recovered at the scene. It was also learned the suspect had a warrant for Attempted First Degree Murder with Extreme Indifference. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office Critical Incident Response Team will be conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
