DONIPHAN, Mo (News First) – A Poplar Bluff man drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming in the Current River in Ripley County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 47-year-old Edward D. Neal began struggling while swimming in the river. Neal became unconscious and drowned. He was pronounced dead by doctors at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center about an hour after the incident took place. The tragedy took place near the Current River Bridge in Doniphan.
