STEELVILLE, Mo. (News First) – The Steelville R-III School District was put on a soft lockdown on Tuesday (Sept 10th) due to a misunderstanding. In a Facebook post, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office states it put the district on lockdown after it was contacted by a school administrator about a potential threat. Upon investigating, authorities discovered a concerned individual had mistaken a COVID Relief Funding list of Missouri Schools, in which Steelville was included, for an active shooter list. The list, published on a government website, was titled “Targeted Schools” for COVID Relief Funding and referenced schools that had received funding through the COVID Relief Grant funds. The sheriff’s office determined there was never any threat and the safety of school staff and students was never in danger.
