ST LOUIS (News First) – Paul Goldschmidt’s double in the 8th inning scored Michael Siani, who was the go-ahead and winning run as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 Wednesday night at Busch Stadium. Nolan Arenado’s 16th homerun in the 4th inning was how the Birds got their first run of the game. Lance Lynn, fresh off the disabled list, looked good on the mound in his return. He pitched 5 solid innings as a starter, gave up one run on 5 hits, he struck out 7 and only walked one batter. 

Reliever JoJo Romero, who is now 7-2, got the final two outs in the 8th and he earned the win. Ryan Helsley needed just eight pitches for a 1-2-3 9th inning, earning him his Major League-leading 44th save. The Cards and Reds play the rubber game of the series Thursday afternoon in St. Louis. Sonny Gray, with a record of 12-9, will start for the Redbirds.
