GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. – A man was arrested after crashing into an Amish buggy and fleeing the scene near Fancy Farm on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The Graves County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 11:55 a.m. regarding the crash, which occurred approximately three miles east of Fancy Farm on Kentucky Highway 80 West. Witnesses reported the suspect’s vehicle fled the scene with heavy damage after the collision.

The horse pulling the buggy broke free and ran away but was later located and returned to its owner.

Deputies said the suspect, identified as James L. Gholson, 49, of Arlington, was located by the Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office at a nearby residence. Gholson, who was found to be under the influence of alcohol, has several prior DUI convictions and was driving on a suspended license due to a previous DUI.

Authorities said Gholson admitted to hitting the buggy and driving away. He also refused to submit to a blood test, prompting deputies to obtain a search warrant for a blood sample.

The operator of the buggy, identified as Roy Mast, 55, of Dublin, Ky., was transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center for treatment.

Gholson was charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license, and leaving the scene of an accident, according to officials.
