MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (News First) — The first meeting of Class #7 of the Citizen’s Academy is in the books, and participants experienced an engaging and informative night.

The evening began with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Honor Guard posting the colors, setting a formal tone for the event. Sheriff Ryan Norman then delivered a presentation on the history of the sheriff’s office, tracing its roots back to Medieval England, where the position was known as “shir-reeve.” Norman explained how these early duties have evolved into the constitutional responsibilities sheriffs carry out today, such as courthouse operations, tax collection, election oversight, inmate transport, and serving warrants.

Next week, Class #7 participants will get a hands-on lesson in the duties of patrol deputies, including how deputies conduct DUI investigations. They will also have the opportunity to use the department’s virtual reality system, which simulates real-life scenarios requiring verbal de-escalation and, when necessary, the use of force.

The sheriff’s office extended thanks to the sponsors who supported the program: Atlas Roofing Metals & Cube, Coca-Cola, Chick-fil-A, and Papa John’s. The sheriff also praised graduates of previous classes who served as liaisons for Class #7, acknowledging their excellent work in making the night a success.
