STE GENEVIEVE, Mo. (News First) – There are many reasons for Ste. Genevieve County residents to cast their ballots on Tuesday, November 5th. Luke Turnbough previews the contested races on the ballot.
The audit received a grade of good from the state auditor. However, they did find a couple of things. First, the former County collector distributed $2,044 more in fees than collected. The County clerk receives five cents per tract of land for comparing and authenticating delinquent land lists. The audit reviewed the monthly distributions for the 10 months the former County collector was in office in eight of the 10 months. The former County collector issued a check to the County clerk for this fee and also distributed the same amount to the County treasurer. It’s unclear why the former County collector did this. The County collector does not account for the numerical sequence of receipt slips to ensure money received has been properly recorded and deposited. The collector’s computer system uses one receipt slip sequence for all receipt slips issued. Second, the former St. Genevieve County collector did not request and the County commission did not prepare budget amendments for the tax maintenance fund for the year ending December 31st, 2023. The tax maintenance fund was overspent by $11,428 or 28% of budgeted disbursements to see the audit report in its entirety.
Ste. Genevieve County voters will also help decide five statewide constitutional amendments and one statewide proposition that will be on the ballot on Tuesday, November 5th.
