Rolla, Mo., (News First) —Mark Twain National Forest firefighters continue to actively fight the Sugar Fire in the Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs Ranger District. The fire is burning in the glades, about 12 miles south/southwest of Ava. On Tuesday night, firefighters conducted firing operations from roadways to remove fuels between the fire front and containment lines and stop the fire’s progression. This operation was successful, leading to the north and east flanks of the fire being secured. Overall containment is now at 75%.
The U.S. Forest Service – Mark Twain National Forest Cody Norris says, “A spot fire did occur this morning on the north end. Resources responded quickly and are currently working to stop it from spreading. With more firefighters arriving today, good progress is expected in securing the west and south ends of the fire. Also, rain is forecasted for tonight in the area.”
The fire broke out Monday night in the Mark Twain National Forest in Southeast Missouri.
