FARMINGTON, Mo. (News First) – Heavy rain began in parts of Southeast Missouri Sunday night and it really hasn’t let up too much since then. In fact, some locations have received over 6 inches of rain so far. Most areas have received, at least, 2.5 inches of rain. The massive rainfall in a short amount of time caused flash flooding in places like Iron, Washington, Crawford, Dent, Reynolds, St. Francois and several other counties.
Streams quickly rose to their banks and some of them brought forth considerable flood waters to fields, homes, businesses and roads near these streams. Some water rescues had to take place because of people driving into the water. Towns have been dealing with flooded streets as some drains and culverts have clogged. To top it off, officials have called for a non-mandatory evacuation for parts of Iron Mountain Lake.
It’s for those living below the dam and for anyone who lives on East or West Lake Shore Drive. Officials have concerns the lakes’ levy could fail. Unfortunately, the National Weather Service says these areas could receive another 1 to 3 inches of rain before this system ends sometime Tuesday afternoon or evening. At the time of this writing, no fatalities have been reported from the flooding in southeast Missouri.
