POPLAR BLUFF, MISSOURI (NewsFirst) —A body has been identified by the Butler County coroner’s office.

Butler County, Coroner Jim Akers, said the man was identified as 40-year-old Michael Eugene Barnett on Friday, November 24.

It appears that a freak accident may have been the cause of death.

Barnett was in what was believed to be an abandoned house in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

The house was located on North Main Street.

According to officials, Barnett fell through two stories of rotten floorboards.  He then became stuck and unable to free himself.  The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

It is not known why Barnett was inside the abandoned house.  Some neighbors believed the man may have been homeless and in search of shelter from the cold temperatures.

Officials are continuing their investigation into this case. They would also like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying the deceased man.
